The World Bank Joins Mastercard and African Development Bank Group as Co-Chair of the MADE Alliance: Africa
In an ambitious move to bridge Africa’s digital divide, The World Bank has officially joined Mastercard and the African Development Bank Group as a co-chair of the Mobilizing Access to the Digital Economy (MADE) Alliance: Africa. This strategic partnership aims to connect 100 million people and businesses to essential digital services by 2034.
The initiative seeks to leverage the global expertise of the World Bank, the technological innovation of Mastercard, and the local knowledge and reach of the African Development Bank Group. By combining these strengths, the MADE Alliance is working to deliver transformative digital solutions, particularly for rural communities that have traditionally been underserved.
The MADE Alliance is addressing key barriers to digital inclusion, from providing internet connectivity to facilitating access to financial tools and resources. Projects already underway in countries such as Tanzania and Kenya are empowering farmers, enhancing productivity, and opening up new opportunities in the agriculture sector—a backbone of many African economies.
With the World Bank’s leadership in digital transformation, the African Development Bank Group’s regional expertise, and Mastercard’s innovative platforms, the partnership is set to accelerate progress toward a more connected and resilient Africa.
As the Alliance grows and expands its initiatives, it is expected to play a critical role in unlocking Africa’s economic potential, fostering inclusive growth, and promoting sustainable development across the continent.
