Ethiopian Airlines and the African Development Bank (AfDB) have officially launched a historic $10 billion partnership aimed at constructing a mega airport in Ethiopia. The ambitious project, set to dramatically enhance air transportation and logistics capacity in Africa, solidifies Ethiopia’s role as a strategic aviation hub for the continent and beyond.
Expected to accommodate up to 100 million passengers annually, the mega airport project will be among the largest aviation infrastructures on the continent, rivaling major international airports worldwide. This venture is poised to spur job creation, stimulate trade, and promote continental and global economic integration.
According to the press release, the African Development Bank is leading the financing, combining resources with Ethiopian Airlines and tapping into sovereign and private sector support. The project is aligned with Ethiopia’s Growth and Transformation Plan, aiming to modernize the country’s infrastructure and elevate its international competitiveness.
The partnership brings together cutting-edge technology, expertise, and substantial financial resources. As outlined in the announcement, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew stated, “This project will transform Ethiopia’s aviation landscape and strengthen our position as Africa’s leading airline.” The airport will offer ultra-modern facilities, with state-of-the-art cargo, passenger, maintenance, and training centers.
The collaboration underlines the role of the African Development Bank in supporting Africa’s infrastructure ambitions and championing sustainable investments. The project will adhere to international environmental standards and feature advanced green technologies to minimize its ecological impact.
Plans also include extensive support infrastructure: highways, parking spaces, and hotels, alongside a special economic zone designed to attract local and international business.
Upon completion, the airport is expected to position Ethiopia as a formidable player in global aviation, catalyze regional development, and enable the country to handle increasing air traffic, tourists, and business travelers.
