Sharjah International Award for Refugee Advocacy and Support (SIARA) Receives Record 790 Submissions for 2025 Edition
The Sharjah International Award for Refugee Advocacy and Support (SIARA) has reached a historic milestone, receiving a record 790 submissions for its 9th edition. This marks a significant 49.9% increase in unique nominations compared to the 2024 edition. Attracting participation from 68 countries across five continents, the award’s growing impact reflects a rising global commitment to advancing refugee advocacy and long-term, sustainable humanitarian solutions.
Organised under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, and H.H. Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of The Big Heart Foundation (TBHF), SIARA is a joint initiative of TBHF and UNHCR. Over the years, SIARA has not only served to recognise transformative humanitarian work but has provided vital support for organisations to sustain and amplify their impact through an annual cash prize of AED500,000 (US$136,000), exclusively funded by The Big Heart Foundation.
Unlike many awards, the prize is fully covered by the Foundation and not drawn from donations, underscoring TBHF’s long-term commitment to rewarding individuals and organisations who are leading transformative efforts to advance refugees’ rights and dignity. SIARA’s focus extends beyond providing emergency relief; it actively promotes long-term solutions, empowering refugees and displaced communities towards lasting resilience and self-reliance.
The notable surge in participation not only highlights SIARA’s pivotal role in humanitarian advocacy but also its expanding international scope. The award drew submissions from 53 countries in 2024; in 2025, that figure has soared to 68, reflecting the growing influence of SIARA in promoting humanitarian excellence. This year’s entries represent 790 unique organisations, showcasing a multitude of initiatives dedicated to creating sustainable livelihoods and upholding the dignity of refugees.
Alya Obaid Al Musaiebi, Director of TBHF, commented, “**SIARA’s expansion reflects a global paradigm shift and one that prioritises sustainable solutions regarding advocacy for refugees. This growth signals a collective global commitment to building futures where displaced communities thrive, and we see empowerment as a cornerstone of lasting change. By recognising those who equip refugees with the knowledge and resources for self-reliance, enabling dignity and opportunity, SIARA is championing a cause that will ultimately benefit generations for many years to come.**”
She further noted the crucial role of grassroots initiatives in this ecosystem: “**This year’s submissions also reveal the immense potential of grassroots initiatives rooted in local expertise; those that integrate culture, education, healthcare, and rights; addressing both urgent needs and systemic barriers. SIARA exists to elevate these models, ensuring sustainable, refugee-focused solutions are championed globally as blueprints for a more equitable future for all people.**”
Geographically, participation in SIARA 2025 demonstrates the global reach of refugee-focused advocacy. Africa led with 368 submissions, followed by Asia with 229. The MENA region contributed 162 submissions, while Europe and North America put forth 15 and 14 submissions, respectively. Oceania made a notable entry with one submission, reflecting the worldwide commitment to addressing refugee needs.
Top contributions originated from countries including Pakistan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Uganda, Lebanon, Kenya, Afghanistan, Yemen, and Egypt. Further testament to the award’s growing influence is the emergence of submissions from new countries such as Algeria, Angola, Djibouti, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, and Tokelau.
The 2025 edition of SIARA illustrates not only the extraordinary reach and diversity of humanitarian work but also SIARA’s vital role as a platform for championing innovative, sustainable solutions in support of refugees worldwide.
