Morocco Becomes First African Nation to Create Dedicated Ministry for Artificial Intelligence
Morocco has taken a groundbreaking step in the African tech landscape by becoming the first country on the continent to establish a Ministry of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Transformation and Administrative Reform. This new ministry demonstrates Morocco’s commitment to positioning itself at the forefront of the AI revolution and digital advancement in Africa.
Ahmed Rahhou has been appointed to lead the new position, which combines artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and administrative reform, following his appointment by King Mohammed VI, today, as part of Fatima Zahra Mansouri’s government.
Operating under the strategic framework of the Maroc IA 2030 Roadmap, the ministry’s mission is clear: to expand the use of artificial intelligence and digital technologies across the nation. According to government objectives, Morocco aims to generate an additional $10 billion in GDP by 2030 through AI-driven growth. The plan is also ambitious in terms of employment, targeting the creation of 50,000 direct and indirect AI jobs.
Capacity building is another key focus for the ministry. By 2030, Morocco aims to certify 200,000 people in AI skills, creating a robust talent pool and fostering innovation. This approach is designed to ensure the nation’s workforce is well-equipped to harness the benefits of new and emerging technologies.
With the launch of this dedicated ministry, Morocco asserts itself as a leader in Africa’s digital transformation journey, setting a powerful example for other countries on the continent to follow.
