Botswana’s President Boko Attends Zambia’s Presidential Inauguration to Strengthen Regional Ties
Lusaka, Zambia — President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko of Botswana has departed for Lusaka to attend the inauguration ceremony of His Excellency Mr Hakainde Hichilema, following Hichilema’s re-election as President of the Republic of Zambia in the General Election held on 13 August 2026.
This inauguration marks a significant milestone in Zambia’s democratic progress, drawing Heads of State and Government, senior officials, and distinguished guests from across the region and beyond. Botswana’s participation in such national celebrations of fellow Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states reflects a deep-seated commitment to regional solidarity, diplomatic engagement, and the pursuit of strengthened cooperation among countries of Southern Africa.
These diplomatic engagements serve as opportunities for leaders to reinforce bilateral relations, promote regional priorities, and deepen collaboration in areas such as peace, security, economic development, and regional integration. They also underscore the shared commitment to uplifting and unifying the region through mutual interests and concerted action.
President Boko is joined by the Minister of International Relations, Honourable Dr Phenyo Butale, and other senior government officials. During President Boko’s absence, Vice President Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe will assume the role of Acting President of the Republic of Botswana.
President Boko and his delegation are expected to return to Botswana later today, affirming the spirit of solidarity and advancing Botswana’s role as a key stakeholder in regional cooperation and diplomacy.
