Hedera Africa Hackathon Launches with $1M Prize Pool
In a significant move to boost Web3 adoption across Africa, the Hedera Africa Hackathon has been launched with an impressive $1 million prize pool. This event, organized by the Hashgraph Association and the Exponential Science Foundation, aims to attract over 10,000 participants from 15 African countries.
The hackathon, scheduled to run from August 1 to September 30, will focus on developing innovative solutions on the Hedera network, a sustainable, enterprise-grade public blockchain. The event is designed to encourage the use of technologies that combine Web3 with Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create transparent cognitive solutions. These solutions will optimize processes, facilitate decision-making, and automate execution.
The hackathon is structured around four key tracks:
- Onchain Finance and Real-World Asset (RWA) Tokenization
- ESG Sustainability and Traceability
- Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) and AI
- Gaming, Metaverse, and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs)
Up to 15 outstanding teams will receive prizes based on innovation, impact, and alignment with the hackathon’s goals. The event will include onsite activities in over 20 African cities, including Lagos, Cairo, Nairobi, Kinshasa, Cape Town, Casablanca, and Tunis.
The growing interest in Africa’s Web3 potential is evident, with more than 50 partners and 100 universities and tech hubs already joining the event. This initiative is particularly significant in Africa, where many people face challenges in accessing reliable financial services due to high inflation, weak banking systems, and widespread corruption. The hackathon offers opportunities for Web3 projects to provide alternative solutions for saving and earning.
