African Development Bank Group Invests US$332 Million to Boost South African SMEs
The African Development Bank Group has made a significant investment of US$332 million in a capital markets security issued by Standard Bank Group Limited, Africa’s largest bank by total assets. This investment is aimed at strengthening financial support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across South Africa.
According to Kennedy Mbekeani, the African Development Bank Group Director General for Southern Africa and Country Manager for South Africa:
“This investment reflects the African Development Bank’s commitment to strengthening Africa’s financial architecture while directing long-term capital to where it is needed most — South Africa’s small businesses and entrepreneurs.”
As reported, by December 2025, Standard Bank Group had fully utilised the 2024 facility, supporting a total of 5,425 SMEs and surpassing its initial target of 4,000. The loans under this initiative have been directed towards businesses operating in agriculture, retail, wholesale trade, and manufacturing sectors, demonstrating a wide-reaching impact on the country’s economic landscape.
This development underlines the crucial role of both local and international partners in supporting economic growth and shared prosperity through targeted financing for SMEs, which are recognized as the backbone of job creation and innovation within the country.
