Sidi Ould Tah Elected as President of the African Development Bank
In a significant move for African finance, Sidi Ould Tah has been elected the new President of the African Development Bank (AfDB). Tah, a seasoned economist and serving Managing Director of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), steps into one of the continent’s most influential economic leadership roles.
The announcement came after a rigorous election process, reflecting the Pan-African institution’s dedication to inclusive development and strong leadership. Sidi Ould Tah’s election is expected to mark a new chapter for the AfDB, renowned for its pivotal role in financing key infrastructure projects and supporting economic transformation across Africa.
Tah brings with him extensive experience in development finance. During his tenure at BADEA, he oversaw a period of growth and cooperation between Arab and African economies, boosting funding for projects in fields such as energy, agriculture, transport, and water resource management.
Stakeholders from across the continent have expressed optimism about his appointment. Many expect Tah to prioritize tackling challenges like youth unemployment, climate change, and access to finance for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). His leadership is anticipated to drive ambitious programs in green finance, digital innovation, and intra-African trade, supporting the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
According to the new AfDB President, “I am deeply honored by the trust placed in me to lead this esteemed institution at such a critical moment for Africa’s development.”
Tah’s election comes at a time when Africa is striving to recover from recent economic shocks and make strides towards sustainable, inclusive growth. Under his stewardship, the AfDB is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the continent’s next phase of transformation.
